While studying at the university, he showed interest in theatrical acting, and then began to participate in theatrical competitions. After seeing his work at one of these competitions, Harpal Tiwana, the leading Punjabi playwright, invited him to join his theater group with a proposal of 150 rupees. 

Amitabh Bachchan was the first choice for Ardha Sathya, but he rejected the offer, and, fortunately, it was for Om Puri. In the era of the 70s and 80s, Om Puri was the most popular actor in feature films. 

He said that he liked more to act in feature films, but he had to move to a commercial cinema to earn money and buy cars and bungalows. In 2004 he was awarded the title of Honorary Officer of the Order of the British Empire for his services to the British film industry.

His first wife, Sima Kapoor, divorced, is the sister of actor Anna Kapoor. In 2013, he published the book The Incredible Hero: Om Puri, written by his then wife Nandita S. Puri. Hardly a Hero - Om Puri
